PSYC 356: Aslyum: Psychological Effects: Mental and Physical Health

Asylum medicine is a field comprised of clinicians who conduct medical and mental health forensic evaluations of asylum seekers, and the educational, advocacy, and scholarly work that they perform. The mission of the Society of Asylum Medicine (SAM) is to create a community of physicians, mental health providers, and other caregivers, as well as legal and human rights professionals who work with individuals seeking asylum. SAM provides a robust bibliography and library of asylum medicine and human rights literature, including essential legal and historical documents.

The Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the healthcare of refugees and asylum seekers, as well as addressing equity in healthcare.
Their members include medical providers, nurses, social workers, researchers, coordinators and many other professionals who spend much of their workday caring for newly-arriving refugees, asylum seekers and immigrants. Their mission is to educate, coordinate, and provide a forum for communication by which members (and the general public) can become more informed about best practices in refugee and immigrant healthcare.

HealthRight partners with communities to overcome discrimination and marginalization in healthcare and build inclusive systems of care, using community-driven and owned solutions. Their four program areas focus on HIV, violence, mental health, and reproductive, maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health.
