Should I use this AI tool?

AI is, seemingly, everywhere, with new tools and models constantly coming on the scene. There are a lot of AI tools geared specifically towards researchers, as well as the LLMs we've all come to know over the last few years. It might be helpful to get a sense of how an LLM functions as you decide how to make ethical use of it.

Learning to parse, analyze, and synthesize academic literature is a critical part of your training as scientists and scholars. As is refining and sharing your own ideas in the scholarly conversation. Don't let an AI tool do your writing or thinking for you. That said, there are thoughtful and ethical ways you might engage with AI research tools:

  • brainstorming/thought partners
  • refining your research topic
  • writing code
  • research tools like Connected Papers can be a useful addition to your literature searching toolbox

Approach AI-generated information with healthy skepticism - it is often incomplete, inconsistent, and inaccurate. Doublecheck and verify with non-AI sources. Finally, cite the tools you've used and explain how and why you opted to include them in your process.
