HIST 163: Communications in Early America: Class Activity

Instructions

In small groups, investigate the linked collections.

Based on your observations, answer:

  • What are these collections?

  • Who created them?

  • What is their purpose or significance, both historically and contemporaneously?

  • How were they chosen? What might have been the criteria? How may have power been expressed?

  • What can we tell about the collection from a macro view?

Then:

Look at one or two things in each collection and take note of how it is described.  Plug the keywords, or descriptive terminology into the library catalog or worldcat.org and see what comes up.
