Just like numbers cannot speak for themselves, no technology is neutral - it reflects the conditions, assumptions, and biases of the context in which it was built, refined, and operated. It reflects the data it was trained and tested on and the priorities of its developers.
As we think about the prevalence of AI in our lives, both through intentional use and as a byproduct of our constant interaction with algorithmically-informed systems, it is crucial that we consider the social, economic, and ecological impacts of these developing technologies alongside the potential personal benefits and risks their use may incur.
