ENGL 348: Comics and Ecology: Comics & Graphic Novels

Professor: Mike Classon Frangos

Using Subject Headings

Williams Libraries, and most academic libraries, organizes our resources using the Library of Congress Classification, so we also utilize Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) and Library of Congress Genre/Form Terms (LCGFT) to provide access to our collections by subject and/or genre/format. Controlled vocabularies like LCSH and LCGFT are arranged systematically, and can be useful tools to help browse the collection by topic. Subject headings and Genre/Form terms for each resource are located in the "Details" section of the catalog record, under "Subjects" and "Genre"

Browsing Comics & Graphic Novels

The majority (but certainly not all) of the comics and graphic novels in Williams Libraries circulating collection are located in one, very distinctive, shelf on the first floor of Sawyer library (see image to left). The call number range is PN6151 - PN9999. It can be a useful searching strategy to go to this section in Sawyer and take a look at the materials in person. However, using subject headings and genre terms will ensure that you find all of the graphic novels in our collections, not just those shelved in this area. Some graphic novels are shelved with specific topics, instead of shelved by genre/form. See examples below:
