Folksonomy : a user-generated system of classifying and organizing online content into different categories by the use of metadata such as electronic tags.
Examples:
- The Austin Graffiti Project is a photography blog by Rachel Panella that utilizes a controlled vocabulary developed from folksonomy created from the tags of users of the graffiti documentation website FatCap
- The Digital Transgender Archive is an example of a tag-based folksonomy in action within a digital archive. The system is best explored through the topic browse list
- Williams Libraries Circulating Zine collection has started developing a taxonomy of terms searchable within the catalog! Example: MoonEaters Issue 1 Volume 1. We only have about 1/6th of the collection described, but you can add more terms to the folksonomy as you read zines by using this form
Let's Tag some Zines!
- Take a look at the zines in the classroom - there is one zine on each table:
- Think about how you would describe the zine(s): consider the content, format, etc.
- Use this Google Sheet to enter your descriptive terms as tags, one tag per cell. Be sure you are inputting terms on the tab that correlates with the correct zine!
