Goal: Examining how books are described 

Format: Exploration followed by discussion. Working in pairs, you will look up the following four books in the library catalog. Then, we will regroup and have discussion about how each book is classed in the library system. 

Table Assignment:

Group 1: Islands of Decolonial Love
Group 2: Ch’ayemal Nich’nabiletik / Los Hijos Errantes / the Errant Children
Group 3: Deep Rivers
Group 4: Among the Almond Trees
Group 5: Handful of Salt

Instructions:

  1. Look up each book in the library.williams.edu
     
  2. Looking at the Subject Headings assigned to the book: What do you notice? What do you wonder?  
     
  3. To broaden your exploration: look up the book in Worldcat: What do you notice? What do you wonder?  
     
  4. Considering what you found out in the library catalog and in Worldcat; What is missing from these classifications?  What other terms would you want to add?  How else would you like to describe the book? Add you suggestions to this document

Be prepared to share your observations with the whole class when we regroup
