Goal: Examining how books are organized in the Williams library catalog
Format: Small group exploration followed by discussion.
Instructions:
- Look up each book in the library.williams.edu|
- Look at the call # for your book and take note of the classification category (the 2 letters at the start of the call #)
- Go to the Library of Congress Classification: https://www.loc.gov/aba/cataloging/classification/lcco/lcco_p.pdf
- Locate the corresponding classification for each book
- Looking at the four classification schemes, what do you notice? what is surprising? what changes would you like to make?
Be prepared to share your observations with the whole class when we regroup
