CHEM 313: Synthetic Applications in Chem: AI Writing Activity

How good is AI at Writing an Introduction?

Use an AI tool of your choice to test it's writing and synthesis skills.

  • Ask the AI tool to write an introductory paragraph on your topic, providing a concise overview of the the research question and its significance, with examples of prior research to contextualize the problem being investigated. You can use this wording to make sure all criteria are included in your prompt. It's ok if you have to go back and forth with the AI a little to clarify what you want it to do.

Evaluate how it did

  • Did the AI tool start with a broad overview of the topic?
  • DId the AI tool contextualize the  topic by providing real-world examples of prior research?
    • Are these examples REAL (not hallucinations) and do they say what the AI tool thinks they are saying?

Compare

  • How does this writing sample compare to your human generated draft?
  • Does the writing feel natural, like something a human would write?
  • Did the AI tool choose to take a significantly different angle to your topic, or did it generate a similar perspective?

Grade the AI

  • Give the AI tool's work a letter grade based on how well it performed the task. Use the first four criteria in the rubric linked above.
  • Share your grade with the class via the QR code!
