How to Find Video Games: Home

Williams Libraries purchases video games for academic and recreational purposes.

History of the Video Games Collection

In spring 2010 David Michael '13 and Jason Hernandez '13, responding to a call from College Council for proposals for their Great Ideas initiative, suggested the purchase of a small collection of video games for use by students. Their application for funding pointed out that the games chosen would provide a healthy, more creative alternative to alcohol-centered activities. Multi-player games could also encourage collaborative rather than individual and isolated play. Since the Libraries hold other forms of media, it made sense for Sawyer to provide a home for the collection.

In addition to the Great Ideas project, faculty have also been building the video games collection to support their courses. For example, a faculty member in Africana Studies asked the Libraries to purchase Grand Theft Auto so that students could analyze representations of race in media.
