Activity #1 - Identifying Type of Source (Evidence)

Time: 5 mn 

Looking at the assignment prompts, as a group brainstorm the categories of information sources you wish to find/use (think about whose voice, perspective you want to hear from). 

Activity #2 - Finding books in the library

Time: 10 mn 

  1. Use the Williams Libraries catalog to search for the topic Atomic Bomb 
    • Browse through the list of results. What do you notice?  What surprises you?
       
  2. Refine your search to find only books in print
    In the  Tweak My Results section, check "Book" under Resource Type. Check "Held in Library" under Availability
    • Browse through the list of results.
    • What do you notice?  What surprises you?
       
  3. Select 1 book you are interested in (you can use your own search topic) 
    • How would you find this book in the library? 
    • How would you find more books like this one?  

Activity #3 - Scholarly Sources

Time 10 mn 

  1. Go to the library's list of databases 
    • Half of the group: connect to database Sociological Abstracts 
    • Half of the group: connect to database America History and Life 
       
  2. Search for the the topic Atomic bomb (or your own search topic) and browse through some of the results you find 
     
  3. Discuss as a group:
  • What type of sources are you finding in each database? 
  • When would you use such databases? 

Activity #4 - Primary sources (newspapers and magazines)

Time: 10 mn 

  1. Connect to the library database Proquest Historical Newspaper
    • search for Editorial Cartoons on the topic Atomic Bomb for the period 1945-1970
    • What do you notice? what surprises you? 
       
  2.  Consult the magazine on your table 
    • You can browse, or use the index (front of first volume) to find materials on the topic
    • What do you notice? what surprises you? 
       
  3. Question we will discuss as a group:
    • When / How would you use these type of sources in a sociology / history research paper?
